HEBREWS
The author of Hebrews is unknown. It is written to second-generation Hebrew Christians who may have been considering returning to Judaism. Jewish Christians were suffering fierce persecution, socially and physically, from Jews and from Romans for their decision to follow Jesus Christ. The book of Hebrews offered reassurance to the Jewish believers that Christianity was true and that Jesus was indeed the Messiah. Hebrews 10:23," Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful."
The theme of the book of Hebrews is Christ, the mediator of a new and better covenant. It presents the sufficiency and superiority of Christ. Throughout Hebrews, the author compares Jesus to the heroes and icons of the Jewish faith. Each hero played a part, but His sacrifice, His covenant, and His current ministry are far, far greater than anything the others have to offer. Jesus also has a better ministry after ushering in a better covenant built on better promises with a better sacrifice: Himself.
Apart from Romans, Hebrews is the most doctrine-infused book of the New Testament. Significant to its teachings is Jesus as the perfect revelation of God, the final and complete sacrifice for sin, the compassionate and understanding mediator, and the only way to eternal life. A key verse is Hebrews 1:3, [Christ] "who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high."
