1 & 2 THESSALONIANS

1 Thessalonians

Paul wrote 1 Thessalonians to the church in Thessalonica during his second missionary journey. Paul had received a concerning report from Timothy about the Thessalonian church. Paul writes to them to restore their hope, which was tested by unexpected deaths in the church, and reassures them that both the dead and the living believers will be safe at the second coming. Paul also wants to teach them that persecution would not be uncommon for the Christian life.

The central theme of this letter is Jesus' second coming. Paul verifies that when Jesus returns, the dead who have believed in Christ will rise and will join the living to meet the Lord in the air. Unbelievers will experience God's wrath, while believers will inherit eternal life. In preparation for that great day, Christians are given the high calling to be holy and blameless. God, who is faithful, will produce in them the holiness He requires.

2 Thessalonians

Shortly after writing 1 Thessalonians, the Apostle Paul received a report that the Thessalonian church had accepted the strange claim that "the day of the Lord has come." Paul sent them this second letter to calm their fear and correct their faulty beliefs.

2 Thessalonians 2:1-5 "Now, brethren, concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our gathering together to Him, we ask you, not to be soon shaken in mind or troubled, either by spirit or by word or by letter, as if from us, as though the day of Christ had come. Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day will not come unless the falling away comes first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of perdition, who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God or that is worshiped, so that he sits as God in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God. Do you not remember that when I was still with you I told you these things?"

The letter's core theme is Jesus' second coming. It highlights vital end time prophesies such as, Jesus' return will be preceded by an "apostasy" (or rebellion) and by the appearance of the "man of lawlessness," the Antichrist. When Jesus comes, He will defeat this rebellious world ruler. He will bring justice to oppressed Christians and wrath to unbelievers.

Also addressed in this letter, it appears that some of the Thessalonians may have stopped working to await and proclaim the second coming. But, in reality, lazy Christians may have been exploiting wealthier Christians' generosity to avoid work. Paul urges them to rectify their behavior. Paul also continues his encouragement to strengthen the Thessalonians in the face of continuing persecution.
